The Mohegan Pequot, often referred to as the Mohegan, are an Algonquian-speaking Native American tribe native to the region of present-day Connecticut. Historically, they were part of the larger Pequot nation, which was a dominant power in the area before the 17th century. Following a devastating conflict known as the Pequot War in the 1630s, the Pequot nation was largely annihilated or dispersed. The Mohegan, under the leadership of Uncas, allied with the English colonists and were instrumental in the defeat of their former kin. This alliance, while securing the Mohegan's survival, also marked a significant shift in regional power dynamics.

After the war, the Mohegan established their own territory and governance, distinct from the remnants of the Pequot. They maintained a complex relationship with the English, navigating treaties and colonial expansion. Throughout the colonial and early American periods, the Mohegan faced pressures on their land and sovereignty, yet they persevered as a distinct cultural and political entity. Today, the Mohegan are federally recognized as the Mohegan Tribe, with their reservation located in Uncasville, Connecticut. The tribe is known for its economic development, particularly through the Mohegan Sun casino, and for its efforts to preserve and promote its cultural heritage. The legacy of the Mohegan people is deeply intertwined with the history of New England and the broader narrative of Native American resilience.
