Mohegan

Mohegan refers to a Native American people of the Northeastern United States. Traditionally they inhabited eastern Connecticut along the Thames River and the lower Connecticut River. The Mohegan language belongs to the Algonquian language family and is related to other languages in the region. They are distinct from the Mohican (Mahican), who lived farther west along the Hudson River valley.

Historically, the Mohegan were led by sachem Uncas in the 17th century. They allied with English colonists during the Pequot War and emerged as a separate community after the conflict. Under Uncas and his successors, the Mohegan maintained a degree of autonomy under colonial rule and remained based around present-day Uncasville.

Today, the Mohegan Tribe of Indians of Connecticut is a federally recognized tribe. It maintains its own government and constitution, with a tribal council and a sovereign authority over tribal affairs within the framework of U.S. and Connecticut law. The tribe is headquartered in the area of Uncasville, near the Mohegan Sun resort complex.

Economy and culture: The Mohegan operate several enterprises, most prominently the Mohegan Sun casino and resort, opened in 1996, which has become a major regional employer and tourist destination. The tribe also supports cultural stewardship, education programs, and language revival efforts. The Mohegan language remains endangered, with ongoing initiatives to teach it to younger generations and to document traditional knowledge through community programs and partnerships with cultural institutions.
