Modaalsus

Modaalsus is a theoretical concept in philosophy of modality and cognitive linguistics that describes how modal judgments (possibility, necessity, obligation) interact with sensory processing and perceptual interpretation. It posits that modal information can shape how a perceiver attends to, encodes, and recalls sensory data.

Etymology and origin: The term modaalsus is a portmanteau of "modal" and the Latin suffix -sus, coined in speculative literature by a fictional author in the early 21st century to denote a meta-modality phenomenon.

Framework: In modaalsus, perceptual content is modulated by a set of modal operators that operate on representations across possible worlds. This leads to variation in phenomenology: two observers can perceive the same stimulus differently depending on the modal frame active in their cognitive system. The theory distinguishes primary modality (actual sensory input) from secondary modality (modal constraints such as likelihood, necessity, or obligation).

Applications: Modaalsus has been used in analyses of linguistic utterances with modality and in studies of decision making under uncertainty, as well as in AI systems for multimodal reasoning, where mode-specific priors affect interpretation.
