Common modaalioperaattorit in Finnish include verbs like voida (can, to be able to), täytyä (must, to have to), and pitää (should, to ought to). In contrast, "Hänen täytyy tulla" translates to "He must come," indicating necessity or obligation. "Hänen pitäisi tulla" suggests "He should come," implying advice or a weaker obligation.

Beyond auxiliary verbs, adverbs and certain verbal moods also function as modaalioperaattorit. The conditional mood, for example, often carries a sense of possibility or hypotheticality.
