Mjölksyreproduktion, or lactic acid production, is a metabolic process that occurs in various biological systems. It is primarily known for its role in anaerobic respiration, where it is a byproduct of glycolysis when oxygen is limited. During this process, pyruvate, a product of glucose breakdown, is converted into lactate. This regeneration of NAD+ is crucial for allowing glycolysis to continue, thus producing ATP even in the absence of oxygen.

In humans, mjölksyreproduktion occurs in muscle cells during intense physical activity. When the demand for oxygen exceeds the supply, muscles switch to anaerobic metabolism, leading to a buildup of lactic acid.
