Mittespetrivärv refers to a phenomenon in certain materials where the color observed is not a result of absorption or reflection of specific wavelengths of light in the conventional sense. Instead, the color arises from structural properties of the material at a microscopic or nanoscopic level. This can involve the way light interacts with ordered structures, leading to effects like iridescence or structural coloration.

One common mechanism behind mittespetrivärv is diffraction. When light encounters a finely structured surface, such as thin films or layered materials, the light waves can bend and interfere with each other. Depending on the angle of observation and the wavelength of light, certain wavelengths will be constructively interfered (amplified) and others destructively interfered (canceled out), resulting in the perception of color. This is similar to how a prism separates white light into its constituent colors, but in mittespetrivärv, the structure itself dictates the color observed.

Another related phenomenon is thin-film interference. When light reflects off the top and bottom surfaces of a very thin film, the reflected waves can interfere. Mittespetrivärv is distinct from pigmentary color, where color is produced by the selective absorption of certain wavelengths of light by molecules within the material. In mittespetrivärv, the material itself may be transparent or colorless, but its structure imparts color. This principle is utilized in various natural examples, such as the vibrant blues and greens of peacock feathers or the iridescent sheen on some beetle shells.
