Mittausväliisyyden is a Finnish term that translates to "measurement interval" or "sampling interval" in English. It refers to the duration between successive measurements or samples taken from a continuous process or signal. The choice of measurement interval is crucial in many fields, including engineering, physics, and data analysis, as it directly impacts the resolution and accuracy of the observed data.

A shorter measurement interval allows for a more detailed representation of the signal, capturing rapid changes and high-frequency components. This is often necessary when analyzing fast-moving phenomena or when high precision is required. Conversely, a longer measurement interval may be sufficient for observing slower trends or when data storage and processing capacity are limited.

The Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem provides a theoretical basis for determining an appropriate measurement interval.
