The Mitanni were a Hurrian-speaking people who rose to power in northern Syria around the 15th century BCE. Their kingdom, often referred to as the Kingdom of Mitanni or Hanigalbat, emerged as a major geopolitical force in the ancient Near East, exerting influence over a significant territory. The capital of the Mitanni kingdom is believed to have been located near the modern Syrian city of Raqqa, on the Euphrates River.
