Misâskwatômin

Misâskwatômin is the Cree name for the people of Maskwacis, a confederation of four Cree-speaking First Nations in central Alberta, Canada. The four nations are Ermineskin Cree Nation, Samson Cree Nation, Louis Bull Tribe, and Montana First Nation. Together they form the Maskwacis communities, located in and around the town of Maskwacis (formerly known as Hobbema) near Wetaskiwin, within Treaty 6 territory.

The term misâskwatômin is a Cree word that is commonly understood to mean “the people of the four camps” or “the four bands.” Maskwacis is the English name used to describe the region and its four communities; the two names reflect the same Cree identity.

Historically, the Misâskwatômin have deep roots in the central Alberta landscape and participated in regional trade networks long before and after European contact. They are signatories to Treaty 6, signed in 1876, and govern themselves through band councils within the framework of Canadian federal and provincial laws, while preserving Cree laws, culture, and language.

Culturally, the Misâskwatômin prioritize Cree language and traditions. They maintain language revitalization efforts and cultural programs, including educational initiatives like the Maskwacis Education Centre, traditional ceremonies, drumming, and gatherings that reinforce community ties.

Today, Maskwacis serves as a regional hub for the four nations, emphasizing governance, education, health, housing, and economic development while maintaining a strong Cree identity and connection to the land.
