Minoritetsspråk

Minoritetsspråk, or minority languages, are languages spoken by a minority group within a larger population. These groups may be defined by ethnicity, nationality, region, or religion. The designation of a language as a minority language is often tied to its status within a given state or territory, where it is spoken by a smaller percentage of the population compared to the dominant language.

The recognition and protection of minority languages vary significantly across countries. These efforts are frequently driven by international conventions and national commitments to linguistic diversity and the rights of minority groups. However, minority languages often face challenges. These can include assimilation pressures, limited opportunities for use in public life, and a lack of resources for language maintenance and transmission. The endangerment of minority languages is a global concern, as the loss of a language can represent a loss of cultural heritage and identity for its speakers. Conversely, the revitalization of minority languages is seen as a way to strengthen cultural diversity and empower minority communities.
