Miniemulsiopolymerointi, also known as mini-emulsion polymerization, is a specialized technique used in the field of polymer chemistry. This method involves the preparation of small droplets of monomer dispersed in a continuous phase, typically water, with the aid of surfactants. The droplets are stabilized by the surfactants, preventing coalescence and ensuring a uniform distribution of the monomer.

The process begins with the formation of a water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion, where the monomer is dispersed in a continuous oil phase. This emulsion is then emulsified in water using a second surfactant, resulting in a water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) double emulsion. The inner water droplets containing the monomer are stabilized by the first surfactant, while the outer oil droplets are stabilized by the second surfactant.

The polymerization is initiated by adding a water-soluble initiator to the W/O/W emulsion. The initiator diffuses into the inner water droplets, where it triggers the polymerization of the monomer. The resulting polymer particles are stabilized by the surfactants, forming a stable mini-emulsion.

Miniemulsiopolymerointi offers several advantages over traditional emulsion polymerization. The small droplet size results in a high surface area-to-volume ratio, which enhances the rate of polymerization and improves the control over the particle size and size distribution.
