Key examples include the water cycle, the carbon cycle, the nitrogen cycle, and the phosphorus cycle.

The water cycle, also known as the hydrologic cycle, describes the circulation of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. It involves evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, and collection. The carbon cycle involves the exchange of carbon atoms between the biosphere, pedosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. This cycle is crucial for regulating Earth's climate. The nitrogen cycle explains how nitrogen is converted into multiple chemical forms as it circulates among the atmosphere, terrestrial, and marine ecosystems. Nitrogen is essential for life, being a component of proteins and nucleic acids. The phosphorus cycle describes the biogeochemical cycle that describes the transformations and transport of phosphorus, which is vital for DNA, RNA, and energy transfer.

These environmental cycles are interconnected and interdependent. For instance, the availability of water influences plant growth, which in turn affects the carbon cycle. Human activities, such as deforestation, industrial pollution, and the burning of fossil fuels, can significantly disrupt these natural cycles, leading to environmental problems like climate change, acid rain, and eutrophication.
