Miljödomstolens

The Miljödomstol, or Environmental Court, was a specialized court in Sweden responsible for handling cases related to environmental law. It was established in 1999 and operated as part of the general court system, specifically within the administrative courts. Its primary function was to adjudicate disputes concerning environmental protection, such as those involving permits for industrial activities, water management, and nature conservation.

The court's jurisdiction covered a broad range of environmental matters, including appeals against decisions made by various environmental authorities. This included issues like pollution control, waste management, and the impact of infrastructure projects on the environment. The judges presiding over the Miljödomstol possessed specialized knowledge in environmental law and science.

In 2016, the Miljödomstol was dissolved and its functions were transferred to the Land and Environment Courts (Mark- och miljödomstolar). These new courts, also part of the administrative court system, inherited the responsibilities and caseload of the former Miljödomstol, continuing the specialized handling of environmental and land use disputes. The establishment of the Miljödomstol and its successor courts reflects Sweden's commitment to robust environmental governance and the resolution of complex environmental legal challenges.
