Mikronæringsstof

Mikronæringsstof is the Danish term for micronutrient. Micronutrients are essential substances that the body needs in very small amounts to function properly. Despite their low quantity requirements, they play crucial roles in a wide range of physiological processes, including metabolism, growth, and immune function.

The primary categories of micronutrients are vitamins and minerals. Vitamins are organic compounds that the body cannot synthesize itself or can only synthesize in insufficient amounts. They are vital for various metabolic reactions and are often classified as either fat-soluble (A, D, E, and K) or water-soluble (B vitamins and C). Minerals are inorganic elements that are also essential for bodily functions. They include major minerals like calcium, potassium, and sodium, and trace minerals such as iron, zinc, and iodine.

Deficiencies in micronutrients can lead to a variety of health problems, often referred to as micronutrient deficiencies or hidden hunger. These deficiencies can impair cognitive development, weaken the immune system, increase susceptibility to infections, and contribute to chronic diseases. Conversely, excessive intake of some micronutrients can also be harmful.

Micronutrients are obtained through a balanced diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and dairy products. In some cases, individuals may require dietary supplements to ensure adequate intake, particularly if they have specific dietary restrictions or increased nutritional needs. Public health initiatives often focus on improving access to nutrient-rich foods and promoting micronutrient awareness to combat deficiencies.
