Micronotation

Micronotation is a system of notating musical pitches with a resolution finer than a semitone, the smallest interval in conventional Western music. While standard notation uses 12 distinct pitches within an octave, micronotation allows for the representation of pitches that fall between these standard notes, often referred to as microtones.

The need for micronotation arises from the fact that many musical traditions around the world utilize intervals smaller than a semitone. Additionally, contemporary composers often explore microtonal possibilities to expand the expressive palette of music. Micronotation systems can vary significantly, with different symbols and conventions developed to represent these finer pitch distinctions. Some systems might use altered accidentals, numerical values, or entirely new graphical elements.

The primary purpose of micronotation is to provide a precise and unambiguous way for musicians to perform microtonal music. Without such systems, accurately notating and performing music with intervals other than standard semitones would be exceptionally challenging. The development and adoption of micronotation are crucial for the study, performance, and preservation of microtonal music across various cultures and contemporary compositional practices.
