Metüüleetri

Metüüleetri, also known as dimethyl ether (DME), is a colorless gas with the chemical formula CH3OCH3. It is the simplest ether, consisting of a central oxygen atom bonded to two methyl groups. DME is a highly flammable substance with a faint, ether-like odor.

Industrially, metüüleetri is primarily produced by the dehydration of methanol. It can also be synthesized from synthesis gas, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, through various catalytic processes. Its properties make it a versatile compound with a range of applications.

One of the most significant uses of metüüleetri is as an aerosol propellant, replacing chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) due to its lower environmental impact. It is also used as a fuel, either directly or as a component in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), offering a cleaner-burning alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Furthermore, metüüleetri serves as a chemical intermediate in the production of other organic chemicals and has potential applications in refrigeration and as a solvent. Its low toxicity and good solvency characteristics contribute to its utility in various industrial processes.
