Metrahizium

Metarhizium is a genus of mitosporic fungi in the order Hypocreales. These fungi are known for their ability to infect and kill insects, making them important entomopathogens. Species within the Metarhizium genus are widespread in soil environments across the globe. They are recognized for their green conidia, which is a characteristic that gives some species their common names, such as "green muscardine fungus."

The life cycle of Metarhizium involves the germination of conidia on the insect cuticle, followed by the penetration of the host's body. Once inside, the fungus proliferates, eventually leading to the death of the insect. After the insect dies, the fungus sporulates on the cadaver, releasing new conidia to infect other insects. This mode of action has led to their exploration and use as biological control agents against various insect pests in agriculture and forestry. Different species and strains of Metarhizium exhibit varying degrees of host specificity and virulence. Research continues to investigate their potential for sustainable pest management strategies.
