Metoksimetaani

Metoksimetaani, also known as dimethyl ether (DME), is a simple organic compound with the chemical formula CH3OCH3. It is a colorless gas at room temperature and pressure, with a faint, ether-like odor. DME is a derivative of methanol, where two methyl groups are linked by an oxygen atom. It is the simplest ether.

Historically, DME was known as wood ether due to its production from methanol derived from wood. Today, it is primarily produced synthetically from natural gas or coal, although bio-based production from biomass is also gaining attention. The synthesis typically involves the dehydration of methanol.

DME is highly flammable and has a low boiling point, -24.8 degrees Celsius. Its physical properties make it similar to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and it is often considered as a potential substitute. It is soluble in organic solvents and slightly soluble in water.

Industrially, DME is used as an aerosol propellant, replacing chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) due to its lower environmental impact. It also serves as a solvent in various chemical processes and as a building block in organic synthesis. Emerging applications include its use as a fuel, either directly or as a blend with LPG, and as a precursor for the production of other chemicals like dimethyl sulfate. DME is considered a clean-burning fuel with low particulate emissions.
