Metlakatla
Metlakatla is a census-designated place (CDP) located in the southeastern part of the Alaska Panhandle, in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is situated on the southeastern shore of Prince of Wales Island, across from the city of Ketchikan. The CDP is part of the Wrangell-Petersburg Census Area. Metlakatla is known for its rich cultural heritage, particularly its Tlingit heritage, which is reflected in the local art, music, and traditional practices. The community is home to the Metlakatla Indian Community, a federally recognized tribe with a population of approximately 1,000 people. The tribe is known for its successful salmon fishing industry, which is a significant economic driver for the community. Metlakatla is also home to the Metlakatla School, which serves students from kindergarten through 12th grade. The community is served by the Metlakatla Airport, which offers limited commercial flights. Metlakatla is located approximately 100 miles southeast of Juneau and 150 miles northwest of Ketchikan. The community is accessible by road via the Alaska Marine Highway, which operates ferry services to and from Ketchikan. Metlakatla is known for its natural beauty, with nearby attractions including the Tongass National Forest and the Prince of Wales Island National Monument. The community is also home to several historic sites, including the Metlakatla Indian Community Cultural Center, which showcases the tribe's cultural heritage.
