Methylenebisacrylamide

Methylenebisacrylamide (MBAm) is a chemical compound with the formula (CH2=CHCONH)2CH2. It is a bifunctional monomer, meaning it contains two polymerizable vinyl groups. This dual functionality allows MBAm to act as a cross-linking agent in polymerization reactions. When copolymerized with acrylamide, it forms a cross-linked network, creating polyacrylamide gels. These gels are widely used in various applications, particularly in biotechnology and analytical chemistry.

The primary use of methylenebisacrylamide is as a cross-linker in the preparation of polyacrylamide gels for electrophoresis. In this process, acrylamide monomers are polymerized in the presence of a cross-linker like MBAm. The ratio of acrylamide to MBAm influences the pore size of the resulting gel. Higher concentrations of MBAm lead to smaller pore sizes, which are effective for separating smaller molecules like proteins. Conversely, lower concentrations of MBAm create larger pores, suitable for separating larger molecules.

Beyond electrophoresis, MBAm is also employed in the synthesis of hydrogels for drug delivery, tissue engineering scaffolds, and other biomedical applications where a stable, three-dimensional polymer network is required. It can also be used in the production of ion-exchange resins and other specialty polymers. Methylenebisacrylamide is typically supplied as a white crystalline powder. It is soluble in water and other polar solvents. Care should be taken when handling MBAm as it can be an irritant and should be used with appropriate personal protective equipment.
