Common metadatatyppejä include descriptive metadata, which provides information about the content of a resource, such as titles, authors, and keywords. Structural metadata describes how a resource is organized, detailing its components and their relationships, like chapters in a book or elements in a dataset. Administrative metadata offers information to help manage a resource, such as creation dates, file formats, and access rights. Technical metadata pertains to the technical characteristics of a resource, including file size, resolution, or encoding.

These types are not mutually exclusive and often overlap.
