Mentalisation-based treatment, often abbreviated as MBT, is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on improving a person's ability to understand their own and others' mental states. This includes thoughts, feelings, intentions, desires, and beliefs. The core idea is that by enhancing mentalisation, individuals can better regulate their emotions, improve their relationships, and reduce impulsive or self-destructive behaviors.

MBT was initially developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder, a condition characterized by unstable moods, relationships, and self-image. Research has shown its effectiveness in reducing the severity of symptoms associated with this disorder. The therapy aims to help individuals develop a more stable sense of self and a more coherent understanding of their experiences.

The process in MBT involves the therapist actively helping the patient to explore their mental states in different situations. This can involve reflecting on past experiences, current interactions, and potential future scenarios. The therapist models mentalising by being curious about the patient's internal world and by reflecting on their own potential mental states in relation to the patient. The goal is to create a safe space where the patient can experiment with new ways of thinking about themselves and others, leading to a more integrated and stable sense of self. The treatment typically involves weekly sessions and can extend over a significant period.
