Menoeriä

Menoeriä is a Finnish term used in accounting and budgeting to denote an expense item or cost category. It refers to a discrete category into which costs are recorded for reporting and control. In this sense, a menoerä helps organize expenditures in financial statements and budgets so that costs can be tracked and analyzed.

In practice, menoerät are part of the chart of accounts and are used to classify expenses. Common examples include personnel costs (palkat ja sosiaalikulut), material and supplies (materiaalikustannukset), services and outsourcing (palvelujen ostot), rents and premises costs (vuokrat), depreciation (poistot), financing costs (rahoituskulut), and other operating expenses (muut kulut). An individual purchase or accrual is allocated to one or more appropriate menoerät depending on its nature. By grouping costs this way, organizations can monitor spending, perform variance analyses against budgets, and prepare the income statement.

Economically, menoerät are reported as expenses for the accounting period, reducing operating profit. They are distinct from tuloerät, or revenue items, which increase income.
