MemorialBizottsági

MemorialBizottsági is a Hungarian public committee established to oversee the planning, development, and maintenance of memorial sites across the country. Formed in 2015 by the Ministry of Culture and Sport, its mandate is to safeguard historical memory, promote national heritage, and ensure that sites related to significant events and figures meet contemporary standards of preservation.

The committee functions under the guidance of a board of directors that includes historians, architects, cultural experts, and representatives from local governments. Its responsibilities include issuing guidelines for the design and placement of memorials, evaluating proposals for new monuments, and monitoring existing memorial sites for compliance with safety and conservation regulations. In addition, MemorialBizottsági collaborates with educational institutions to integrate memorial education into school curricula and organizes public outreach programs to raise awareness about sites of historical importance.

Since its inception, the committee has approved over 120 memorial projects, ranging from war memorials and Holocaust remembrance sites to commemorations of natural disasters and cultural achievements. It also administers a grant program that supports community-led initiatives aimed at preserving local historical landscapes. The committee’s work is funded primarily through national budget allocations, supplemented by private sponsorships and international heritage grants. Its activities are reported annually to Parliament, ensuring transparency and accountability in the stewardship of Hungary’s cultural memory.
