Membránfehérjéket (membrane proteins) are proteins that are associated with biological membranes. They play crucial roles in various cellular processes, including transport, signaling, and cell adhesion. These proteins can be broadly classified into two main categories: integral membrane proteins and peripheral membrane proteins.

Integral membrane proteins are embedded within the lipid bilayer of the membrane, interacting with the hydrophobic core of the fatty acid tails. Some integral proteins span the entire membrane, known as transmembrane proteins, while others are partially embedded. These proteins often function as channels or transporters, facilitating the movement of ions and molecules across the membrane, or as receptors that bind to signaling molecules.

Peripheral membrane proteins, on the other hand, are not embedded within the lipid bilayer but are loosely associated with the membrane surface, typically through electrostatic interactions with integral membrane proteins or the polar head groups of lipids. They can be found on either the intracellular or extracellular side of the membrane and often participate in signaling pathways or provide structural support to the membrane.

The structure of membrane proteins is diverse, with many exhibiting complex three-dimensional folds that are essential for their function. Their amphipathic nature, possessing both hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions, allows them to interact with the membrane environment. Studying membrane proteins is vital for understanding fundamental biological processes and for developing therapeutic strategies targeting various diseases.
