Mellékszerep

Mellékszerep is a term in Hungarian film, theatre and television that refers to a supporting role. The word derives from mellék (beside) and szerep (role). In contrast to the főszerep, the lead role, a mellékszerep is played by a supporting actor who participates in the main plot but does not dominate it.

A mellékszerep can advance subplots, provide contrast to the protagonist, reveal backstory, or deliver humor and emotional depth. Although it may have limited screen time, a well-crafted mellékszerep can be essential to the narrative and to the cohesion of an ensemble cast.

In Hungarian criticism and casting, mellékszereplők (actors who perform such roles) are recognized for versatility and reliability. The term is commonly neutral, though it differentiates from epizodikus szerep or cameó, which denote brief appearances. Awards and nominations in Hungarian cinema and theatre occasionally acknowledge outstanding mellékszereplők.

The concept spans stage, screen and radio, and many performers build long careers on prominent mellékszerepek rather than leading parts. Overall, mellékszerep denotes an integral, non-leading character whose presence supports the story and enriches the audience's experience.
