Mellanörainfektion

Mellanörainfektion, also known as otitis media, is an infection of the middle ear. This is the space behind the eardrum that contains the tiny bones responsible for hearing. It is a common condition, especially in children, though it can affect people of all ages.

The infection is typically caused by bacteria or viruses that enter the middle ear, often following a cold or upper respiratory infection. Inflammation and fluid buildup in the middle ear create pressure, leading to pain and temporary hearing loss. Other symptoms can include fever, difficulty sleeping, and a feeling of fullness in the ear. In some cases, a perforated eardrum can occur, leading to drainage of pus or fluid from the ear.

Diagnosis is usually made by a healthcare professional who examines the ear using an otoscope. Treatment varies depending on the severity and cause of the infection. For viral infections, supportive care such as pain relief and watchful waiting may be recommended. Bacterial infections may require antibiotics. In recurrent or persistent cases, a doctor might consider other treatment options. Prevention strategies include good hygiene, avoiding secondhand smoke, and vaccinations against common respiratory illnesses.
