Mellérendelt

Mellérendelt is a Hungarian grammatical term referring to a clause that is coordinated with another clause of equal grammatical rank. These clauses are typically joined by conjunctions such as 'és' (and), 'de' (but), 'vagy' (or), 'sem' (neither), or 'hanem' (but rather). Mellérendelt clauses are independent and could stand alone as complete sentences. Their relationship is one of addition, contrast, choice, or negation. For example, in the sentence "Eljött a barátom, és elmentünk moziba" (My friend came, and we went to the cinema), "Eljött a barátom" and "elmentünk moziba" are mellérendelt clauses connected by 'és'. The meaning of the combined sentence is derived from the independent meanings of each clause. This contrasts with subordinate clauses (alárendelt) which depend on a main clause for their full meaning. The concept of mellérendelt clauses is fundamental to understanding sentence structure and complex sentence formation in Hungarian grammar.
