Meghatalmazás

Meghatalmazás is a Hungarian legal term that translates to "authorization," "mandate," or "power of attorney" in English. It refers to a legal document or declaration by which one person (the principal) grants authority to another person (the agent or attorney-in-fact) to act on their behalf in specific matters. This authority can be broad, encompassing all business affairs, or limited to a particular transaction or period.

The purpose of a meghatalmazás is to allow someone to delegate tasks or decisions that they cannot or do not wish to handle personally. Common uses include financial transactions, legal proceedings, healthcare decisions, or managing property. For the meghatalmazás to be legally valid, it typically requires the signature of the principal and, depending on the jurisdiction and the scope of the authority granted, may need to be notarized or witnessed.

There are different types of meghatalmazás. A general power of attorney grants broad powers, while a special or limited power of attorney restricts the agent's authority to specific actions. A durable meghatalmazás remains in effect even if the principal becomes incapacitated. The revocation of a meghatalmazás can usually be done by the principal through a written document, provided they are of sound mind. The agent has a fiduciary duty to act in the best interest of the principal.
