Meetermõõdustiku, often referred to as the metric system, is a globally recognized system of measurement. Its foundation lies in the meter, which is the base unit of length. Other units for mass, volume, and other physical quantities are derived from the meter through a standardized set of prefixes and powers of ten. This decimal-based structure makes conversions within the system straightforward.

The metric system originated in France during the French Revolution, with the goal of creating a rational and universally applicable system of weights and measures. The first official definition of the meter was based on a fraction of the Earth's circumference. Over time, the definitions of its base units have evolved to be based on fundamental physical constants, ensuring greater accuracy and stability.

Today, the metric system, officially known as the International System of Units (SI), is used in almost every country for scientific, industrial, and everyday purposes. Its widespread adoption is credited to its logical organization and ease of use, facilitating international trade and scientific collaboration. While some countries, notably the United States, still use imperial units in certain contexts, the metric system remains the dominant global standard.
