Mediatorimuuttuja, or mediator variable in English, is a concept used in social sciences and statistics to explain the relationship between two other variables. It acts as an intermediary, transmitting the effect of an independent variable to a dependent variable. Essentially, it helps to understand how and why an independent variable influences a dependent variable.

The presence of a mediator variable suggests that the independent variable does not directly affect the dependent variable. Instead, the independent variable causes a change in the mediator variable, which in turn causes a change in the dependent variable. For example, if studying the relationship between socioeconomic status (independent variable) and health outcomes (dependent variable), a mediator variable could be access to healthcare. Higher socioeconomic status might lead to better access to healthcare, which then leads to better health outcomes.

Identifying mediator variables is crucial for developing effective interventions. By understanding the pathway through which an effect occurs, researchers and practitioners can target specific mediators to influence the outcome. Statistical methods such as regression analysis and structural equation modeling are commonly used to test for mediation. The process typically involves assessing the direct effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable, the effect of the independent variable on the mediator, and the effect of the mediator on the dependent variable, controlling for the independent variable.
