Medellíns

Medellín is the capital of the Antioquia Department in northwestern Colombia. It is the second-largest city in the country by population, with a metropolitan area that surpasses four million residents. The city sits in the Aburrá Valley in the Central Andes at about 1,500 meters above sea level, giving it a mild climate year-round. It is commonly known as the City of Eternal Spring.

The site developed from a colonial-era agricultural and mining settlement and grew into an industrial and commercial hub during the 20th century. Renewal efforts in the late 20th and early 21st centuries have focused on public transport, urban design, and social programs in hillside neighborhoods.

Medellín operates one of Latin America's most respected urban transit systems, centered on the Metro de Medellín, with rail lines and integrated cable car lines known as Metrocable connecting the city with hillside districts. The system serves as a model of inclusive urban mobility.

The city hosts major cultural institutions such as the Museo de Antioquia and the Botero Museum, and hosts the annual Feria de las Flores. Its economy is diversified, with manufacturing, services, education, and technology sectors; it is a hub for innovation in the region.

Medellín has a large and diverse population, with urban neighborhoods ranging from historic districts to modern developments. The city has undergone significant safety and social-development initiatives to reduce violence and improve quality of life, including community-led projects in Comuna 13.
