Matëse

Matëse is an Albanian term referring to a measuring instrument or device used to determine the magnitude of a physical quantity. The word derives from the verb mat- “to measure” with the agent-noun suffix -ës; in Albanian it can denote a device designed to quantify length, mass, volume, temperature, electrical values, time, or other quantities. In practice, matës is a generic label, while many instruments have specific names (ruler, scale, thermometer, voltmeter, etc.).

Common types include length measuring devices such as rulers and calipers; mass measuring devices like scales and balances; volume measuring devices such as graduated cylinders and measuring jugs; temperature measuring devices such as thermometers; electrical measuring devices like multimeters and ammeters; and time-keeping or flow devices such as clocks and flow meters. In science and industry, matëse often require calibration to ensure accuracy and traceability to standards.

In Albanian usage, matëse appears in educational and technical contexts as a general term for instruments that measure. Terminology can vary by field, with many disciplines using specific names for individual instruments.
