Matryoshkanukkeihin

Matryoshkanukkeihin is a Finnish term that refers to nesting dolls, also known internationally by their Russian name, Matryoshka dolls. These traditional Russian wooden toys are characterized by a set of dolls of decreasing size placed one inside another. The outer doll can be opened at the middle to reveal a smaller doll, which in turn can be opened to reveal another, and so on, until the smallest, innermost doll, which is typically solid and indivisible.

The first Matryoshka doll was created in Abramtsevo, Russia, in 1890 by Vasily Zvyozdochkin, based on a design by Sergey Malyutin. The original doll depicted a peasant woman in traditional dress, holding a rooster. The concept of nesting toys, however, existed in various cultures prior to this. Matryoshkanukkeihin have since become a globally recognized symbol of Russian folk art and craftsmanship.

The dolls are traditionally made from linden wood and are hand-painted. The designs vary widely, ranging from traditional peasant women and fairy tale characters to more modern themes, political figures, and even animal motifs. The intricate painting and lacquering process is a skilled art form, and the quality of the craftsmanship can significantly influence the value of a set.
