Matrikuläre is a term derived from the Latin word "matricula," meaning a register or roll. In a historical and legal context, it refers to the formal entry or registration of individuals, entities, or properties within an official list or record. This act of matrikulierung, or the process of being matrikuliert, signifies official recognition, membership, or inclusion.

Historically, matrikuläre was particularly prevalent in the context of universities and ecclesiastical bodies. Students would be matrikuliert into a university, signifying their enrollment and acceptance into the student body, which often granted them certain rights and privileges. Similarly, clergy might be matrikuliert into a diocese or religious order. In some European historical contexts, particularly within the Holy Roman Empire, matrikuläre referred to the enrollment of states or territories into the imperial diet or other imperial bodies, detailing their obligations and rights within the imperial structure.

The concept also extends to property registration.
