Matricapotenciáljának, often translated as "matrix potential," is a concept used in soil science and hydrogeology to describe the energy state of water within a porous medium like soil. It is a component of the total soil water potential, which dictates the direction and rate of water movement. Specifically, matric potential refers to the reduction in the kinetic energy of water molecules due to their adhesion to soil particles and cohesion with each other. This reduction in energy is caused by the forces of capillary action and adsorption.

The matric potential is always negative, indicating that energy must be supplied to remove water from the soil matrix. Its magnitude increases as the soil becomes drier. In saturated soils, the matric potential is close to zero. As water drains or evaporates, the remaining water is held more tightly by the soil, leading to a more negative matric potential. This negative pressure draws water from wetter areas to drier areas. Understanding matric potential is crucial for predicting crop water availability, irrigation needs, and groundwater recharge processes. It is often measured using tensiometers.
