Materiallarda

Materiallarda is a Turkish word formed from the borrowed root material, adding Turkish plural and locative suffixes. It represents the locative plural form of the noun meaning “in the materials” or “within the materials.” The base root is commonly spelled material in Turkish texts that adopt the English loanword, while the standard native term is materyal or malzeme. When Turkish applies plural and locative suffixes, material becomes materiallar and then materiallarda, following vowel harmony and consonant rules.

Morphology and grammar: Turkish uses agglutination to mark number and case. The plural suffix -lar is attached to the root to yield materiallar (the materials). The locative suffix -da (alternating as -de) attaches after the plural, producing materiallarda, meaning “in the materials” or “among the materials.” The last vowel before the suffix triggers harmony, but in this construction the form materiallarda is phonologically natural for the borrowed root material.

Usage and context: materiallarda is mainly encountered in technical or scholarly Turkish where the English loanword material is used. In everyday Turkish, the native or more common terms materyallerde or malzemelerde are often preferred. The choice between materiallarla/materiallarda and materyallerde/malzemelerde depends on the lexical preference of the text, but both convey location within materials.
