Materiaalipöly

Materiaalipöly, also known as particulate matter, refers to tiny solid or liquid particles suspended in the air. These particles can originate from various sources, including industrial processes, vehicle emissions, construction activities, and natural phenomena such as dust storms and volcanic eruptions. The size of these particles can range from a few nanometers to tens of micrometers, with the most common sizes being less than 10 micrometers in diameter.

Materiaalipöly is classified into two main categories based on their size: PM10 and PM2.5. PM10 refers to particles with a diameter of 10 micrometers or less, while PM2.5 refers to particles with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less. These particles can penetrate deep into the respiratory system, including the lungs and bronchi, and can cause various health issues, such as respiratory infections, asthma, and cardiovascular diseases.

The concentration of materiaalipöly in the air is typically measured in micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³). High levels of materiaalipöly can lead to reduced visibility, damage to vegetation, and even contribute to climate change by affecting the Earth's radiation balance. To mitigate the adverse effects of materiaalipöly, various control measures are employed, including the use of filters, scrubbers, and other air pollution control technologies. Additionally, public awareness campaigns and regulations are implemented to reduce emissions and improve air quality.
