Materiaalihyvän, or material benevolence, is a concept in sustainable design that refers to the ethical and environmental quality of materials chosen for products and systems. It emphasizes not only performance and cost but also the broader impacts of material choices on people, ecosystems, and future generations. In practice, materiaalihyvä encompasses responsible sourcing, low-toxicity substances, durability, repairability, and end-of-life options such as recycling or safe disposal. The idea aligns with circular economy principles by favoring materials with long lifespans, recyclability, and opportunities for reuse, and by reducing dependence on conflict minerals or ecologically damaging extraction.

In Finnish design and CSR literature, the term is used to highlight transparency in the supply chain, traceability of material origins, and supplier responsibility. Proponents argue that prioritizing materiaalihyvän can reduce health risks, cut environmental footprints, and create social value for workers. Critics note that the concept is broad and can be used superficially, and that trade-offs among cost, performance, and ethics require clear decision frameworks and reliable data, such as life cycle assessments and environmental product declarations.

Applications include product design, architecture, construction, textiles, and packaging. Evaluation typically relies on lifecycle metrics, toxicity screening, recyclability rates, and supplier audits.
