Markytor

Markytor is a lightweight markup language and collaborative annotation system designed for marking up text with notes, tags, and revisions. It combines ideas from traditional lightweight markup with structured annotations to support knowledge curation and collaborative editing. The project is described as language-agnostic, with parsers and exporters available for multiple programming environments.

The name markytor is a portmanteau of mark and editor, intended to suggest its role in marking up content and guiding revisions. It is not tied to a single platform, and implementations have aimed to integrate with common wikis and document pipelines.

Core features include inline annotations, cross-references, and metadata blocks. Content can be exported to HTML or PDF, and can be serialized as JSON for integration with other tools. The format is designed to be interoperable with existing markup standards, such as Markdown and simple YAML front matter.

Syntax is intentionally minimal. Annotations may be inserted with tokens such as [note: ...], [tag: ...], or [[xref]]; blocks can be marked for revisions or questions. A separate section or block can carry metadata like authors and version numbers.

Usage and ecosystem: Markytor has been adopted in small-scale knowledge bases, academic note-taking, and collaborative editing platforms. Development is community-driven, with documentation and example repositories hosted in public code-sharing services.
