Marginalfördelningar

Marginalfördelningar describes the probability distribution of a single variable within a multivariate distribution. In simpler terms, if you have a dataset with multiple variables, the marginal distribution for one specific variable shows how the values of that variable are distributed on their own, without considering the values of the other variables. It is derived by summing or integrating over all possible values of the other variables in the joint probability distribution.

For discrete random variables X and Y with a joint probability mass function P(X=x, Y=y), the marginal probability mass function for X is P(X=x) = Σ_y P(X=x, Y=y). Similarly, for continuous random variables X and Y with a joint probability density function f(x, y), the marginal probability density function for X is f_X(x) = ∫ f(x, y) dy.

Understanding marginal distributions is crucial for analyzing and interpreting multivariate data. It allows us to examine the behavior of individual variables in isolation, which can reveal important characteristics of the dataset that might be obscured in the joint distribution. For example, if we are studying the relationship between height and weight, the marginal distribution of height would show us the typical range and frequency of different heights in the population, irrespective of their weight. This concept extends to any number of variables in a multivariate setting.
