Mareeba

Mareeba is a town and locality in the Shire of Mareeba, Queensland, Australia. It is situated on the Atherton Tableland, approximately 60 kilometres west of Cairns. Mareeba is the administrative centre of the Shire and serves as a hub for the surrounding agricultural region.

The town's economy is largely based on agriculture, with significant production of avocados, mangoes, papayas, lychees, and bananas. Mareeba is also a prominent centre for tobacco growing, although this industry has seen a decline in recent years. The region is also known for its beef cattle grazing. Mareeba is a popular destination for tourists, attracted by its natural beauty, agricultural produce, and proximity to the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest. Local attractions include the Mareeba Heritage Museum and the Granite Gorge Nature Park.

The name "Mareeba" is believed to be derived from an Aboriginal word meaning "meeting of the waters," likely referring to the confluence of the Barron River and its tributaries in the area. The town was established in the late 19th century, initially as a service centre for the burgeoning mining and agricultural industries. Its strategic location and fertile land led to its growth as a significant regional centre. Mareeba has a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons.
