Manoilescu

Manoilescu refers to Mihail Manoilescu, a Romanian economist and public intellectual active in the first half of the 20th century. He is noted for his defense of economic protectionism and for analyses of monetary policy within the framework of national development. In his writings, Manoilescu argued that policy should be guided by the structure of a country’s productive sector, using tools such as tariffs and exchange-rate measures to strengthen domestic industry and economic sovereignty. His work is placed within the interwar debates over open markets, protectionism, and autarky, and his ideas contributed to discussions on how policy could influence national economic outcomes. He was involved in scholarly and public discourse on the relationship between money, credit, and the state, seeking to align financial policy with broader economic goals. Although his proposals were controversial and widely debated, Manoilescu’s contributions are regarded as part of Romanian economic history and the broader European conversations about protectionist thought in the interwar period.
