Malpighian tubules are excretory and osmoregulatory organs found in most insects and some other arthropods. They are a vital part of the insect's physiological system, analogous to the kidneys in vertebrates. These slender, tubular structures extend from the digestive tract into the hemocoel, the body cavity of insects.

The primary function of Malpighian tubules is to remove metabolic wastes, such as uric acid, and excess ions from the hemolymph. They achieve this by actively transporting solutes and water from the hemolymph into the tubule lumen. These solutes and water then move into the hindgut, where further reabsorption of water and essential ions occurs. The remaining waste products are then excreted along with feces. This process allows insects to conserve water, which is particularly important in terrestrial environments.

The morphology of Malpighian tubules can vary significantly among different insect species. They may be short and unbranched or long and numerous, and their arrangement within the hemocoel can differ. Some tubules are bathed directly in hemolymph, while others are attached to the gut wall. The cells lining the tubules are specialized for active transport and have numerous microvilli to increase surface area for efficient solute exchange. Malpighian tubules play a crucial role in maintaining hemolymph homeostasis and are essential for insect survival.
