Malmmineraler, also known as iron ores, are rocks and minerals from which metallic iron can be economically extracted. They are primarily composed of iron oxides, such as hematite (Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4), and are essential for the production of iron and steel. Iron ores are typically found in sedimentary rocks, such as banded iron formations, and in igneous rocks, such as those associated with volcanic activity.

Hematite and magnetite are the most important ores, accounting for over 90% of the world's iron production. Limonite and siderite are less common but still significant sources of iron.

The global demand for iron ores is driven by the construction, automotive, and machinery industries, as well as the production of steel for various applications. The largest producers of iron ore are Australia, Brazil, China, India, and Russia, which together account for over 80% of the world's iron ore production. The mining and processing of iron ores have significant environmental impacts, including habitat destruction, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions.
