Malminmuodostuminen refers to the geological processes by which economically valuable concentrations of minerals, known as ore deposits, are formed. These processes involve the movement and concentration of metals and other elements within the Earth's crust. Several mechanisms contribute to malminmuodostuminen, often involving hydrothermal fluids. These hot, chemically active fluids, originating from magmatic intrusions or circulating groundwater heated by the Earth's interior, can dissolve metals from surrounding rocks. As these fluids migrate through fractures and pores, changes in temperature, pressure, or chemical environment can cause the dissolved metals to precipitate out, forming mineral deposits.

Igneous processes also play a significant role. During magma cooling, some elements may become concentrated in residual melts or crystallize as early-forming minerals that are later remobilized. Pegmatites, for example, are coarse-grained igneous rocks that can host concentrated deposits of rare elements and gemstones. Sedimentary processes can also lead to ore formation. Certain metals can be concentrated by weathering and erosion, transported by water, and then deposited in specific sedimentary environments, such as placer deposits formed by the sorting action of rivers and oceans. Metamorphism, the transformation of existing rocks under heat and pressure, can also remobilize and concentrate ore-forming elements. Understanding these diverse geological processes is crucial for exploration and the sustainable extraction of mineral resources.
