Maldonado

Maldonado is a department in southeastern Uruguay. Its capital is the city of Maldonado. The department is located along the Atlantic coast and includes a stretch of beaches and several resort towns, notably Punta del Este, Piriápolis, La Barra, and José Ignacio. The most internationally known destination is Punta del Este, a year‑round resort famous for its beaches, marina, and nightlife, as well as for Casapueblo, the sculptural building by artist Carlos Páez Vilaró situated near Punta Ballena.

The landscape combines sandy beaches, lagoons, and low hills, with a mild climate that attracts visitors primarily in the Southern Hemisphere's summer. The economy is dominated by tourism and services; fishing and agriculture also contribute to local activity.

The department is served by major coastal roadways connecting it with Montevideo and other coastal towns via the Interbalnearia route. The Punta del Este to Montevideo corridor is a key transport axis. The area includes several smaller towns and coastal villages that attract surfers, vacationers, and expatriates.

Population centers include the city of Maldonado (the seat) and resort towns along the coast. The department has a mix of residential, commercial, and tourist facilities, ranging from beaches and hotels to cultural venues.
