Magnitudiluku

Magnitudiluku is a Finnish term that translates to "magnitude number" or "magnitude figure." It is most commonly used in the context of astronomical magnitudes, which quantify the brightness of celestial objects. The magnitude scale is a logarithmic scale where smaller numbers indicate brighter objects. For example, the Sun has a magnitude of about -26.7, while the faintest stars visible to the naked eye have a magnitude of around +6.

The system of astronomical magnitudes was originally developed by the ancient Greek astronomer Hipparchus. He classified stars into six magnitudes, with the brightest stars being of the first magnitude and the faintest being of the sixth. This system was later refined by Norman Pogson in the 19th century, who established the quantitative relationship between magnitudes and brightness. Pogson's scale defines a difference of five magnitudes as a factor of 100 in brightness.
