Maanjäristysenergia refers to the energy released during an earthquake. This energy originates from the build-up of stress within the Earth's crust, primarily due to the movement of tectonic plates. When this stress exceeds the strength of the rocks, they fracture, and the stored elastic strain energy is rapidly converted into seismic waves. These waves propagate outward from the earthquake's focus, causing the ground to shake.

The amount of energy released by an earthquake is directly related to its magnitude. Larger earthquakes, with higher magnitudes, release significantly more energy than smaller ones. This energy is dissipated in various forms, including seismic wave energy (which causes ground motion), heat from friction, and the energy required to break rocks. Scientists measure earthquake energy using scales like the Richter scale and the moment magnitude scale, which are logarithmic and indicate a substantial increase in energy with each whole number increment. For instance, an earthquake of magnitude 6 releases about 32 times more energy than an earthquake of magnitude 5. Understanding earthquake energy is crucial for seismology, hazard assessment, and the design of earthquake-resistant structures.
