MV3Siirtymä refers to the transition process from the older **M3** (or **M3**-style) vehicle identification system to the newer **MV3** (Motor Vehicle Identification System) standard in Finland. This shift was implemented to modernize vehicle registration and improve efficiency in the Finnish Transport Agency’s (Liikennevirasto) operations.

The M3 system, introduced in the 1990s, used a combination of letters and numbers for vehicle identification, often including a prefix indicating the vehicle type (e.g., passenger cars, trucks). The MV3 system, adopted in 2017, replaced this with a more structured format. Under MV3, vehicle registration plates now follow a standardized pattern: two letters, followed by four digits, and ending with two letters (e.g., AB 1234 CD). This change was part of broader efforts to align Finland’s vehicle registration with international standards and reduce fraud.

The transition was gradual, with new registrations shifting to MV3 while older M3-registered vehicles remained valid. Owners of M3-registered vehicles did not need to change their plates unless they underwent modifications requiring re-registration. The Finnish Transport Agency provided clear guidelines to ensure a smooth shift, including online tools for checking registration status and converting old formats to the new system.

The MV3 system also introduced digital registration, allowing for faster processing and reducing paperwork.
